Weird Iowa: Stephen Colbert Skewers Iowa, Scanty Panties Swiped, Weird Winter Weather Lingers

Plus, an Ames woman reportedly fought with three police officers; an Urbandale man rescued from a burning car is in legal trouble again; and a University of Iowa student was charged with stabbing two men after an argument.

Iowa has tickled TV satirist Stephen Colbert's funny bone before, and did it again this week.

An " for all the wrong reasons. "A hospital is no place to be sick, especially if you are an undocumented worker in Iowa," Colbert said during a segment called "The Word."

Colbert skewered Iowa Methodist Medical Center, which is part of the Unity Point network that has a clinic in Ankeny, following a news report that the hospital sent the two undocumented patients, who were seriously injured in a car wreck in rural Iowa, in a private jet back to Mexico.

Taking a pummeling literally was Cedar Falls. Some serious hail fell on the Cedar Valley early in the week. As a thunderstorm rolled through town, it brought with it two bursts of dime and quarter-sized hail. The second burst coated the ground in minutes so that it looked like snow, not hail, had fallen. Check out the video and photos.

In other weird weather, the winter that won't quit prompted the Central Iowa Conference to call off its track meet that was supposed to be held at Waukee High School Thursday because of snow, cold and strong winds. The calendar said May 2, but the forecast brough a high of 35 degrees and 3 inches of snow.

The CIML meet was moved to Monday at 3:30 p.m.

Readers were amazed in March by Urbandale Police car v, which he crashed while "doing doughnuts" on a slick church parking lot.

Urbandale police officers saw drugs in plain view on March 7 when they went to the home of an Urbandale man to inform relatives that Wasekuk was in the hospital. Recently, police arrested Wasekuk recently in connection with the drugs, charging him with possession of LSD and other offenses.

And each week we have some head-scratchers from police reports.

First comes Kaia Anne Kriener, 28, of Ames, who was arrested on eight charges including the assault of three police officers after she reportedly kicked the doorman at Charlie Yokes, prompting a call to police.

Officers found Kriener sitting on the floor in the Pita Pit, a business just around the corner from the Campustown Bar. Kriener reportedly wouldn't stand up and refused to give police her ID and started thrashing, kicking, biting and spitting. During her arrest, leaving teethmarks behind, police said. She also had a pipe with marijuana inside it.

Is it weird to drive a Crown Victoria if you're not a cop?

A West Des Moines man who attempted to pull a car over last week near Johnston wound up in jail for impersonating a public official and other charges.

Justin Grayson, 22, reportedly was driving a white Ford Crown Victoria, a model commonly used by law enforcement authorities, when he attempted to stop another driver near Saylorville Lake. The driver called authorities after the illegal stop and Grayson was arrested by Polk County deputies a short time later.

It wasn’t your granny’s panties that West Des Moines police said were emptied from three drawers at a local lingerie store. Rather, two women are suspected of helping themselves to 120 pairs of thong and hip-hugger panties from the Victoria’s Secret store at Valley West Mall. The panties were valued at $1,500.

And finally, an Iowa City man accused of stabbing two men was arrested in Macomb, IL, was arrested after being found by university police in his girlfriend's dorm at Western Illinois University. Authorities had received tips tying him to the crime.

According to a police, in an altercation near the intersection of Dubuque and Washington Streets. The incident was preceded by an argument between Badding and one of the men.
