(Blog) Fair Trade

What's the meaning behind that Fairtrade logo?

I have had several people ask me about Fair Trade in the last few weeks!

Your coffee, tea, rice, bananas, cocoa, cotton, wine and other products that come from outside the US borders may be a Fair Trade product. Fairtrade certification is a product certification system designed to allow people to identify products that meet agreed environmental, labor and developmental standards. It is overseen by a standard-setting body, Fairtrade International (FLO), and a certification body, FLO-CERT.

There are standards for small farmers and for hired labor companies. Look for the Fair Trade symbol on your products to see if you are supporting sustainable environmental processes, fair labor practices and prices, as well as community development where that product is grown and/or produced.

Even when you are not buying local you are still supporting local economies when you choose Fair Trade products.

What’s in your cupboard that is Fair Trade? I think I will have a cup of tea!
