VIDEO: Linn-Mar Students Share What They Love
What do you love? A prompt for a new film by Linn-Mar students.
This week, last year, I collaborated with 30 of my classmates and created a film called Dream. This year we did it again, only this time it's called Love. The film works by a very simple premise. I ask the students, what do you love? They then write their answers on an acrylic sheet that acts as a transparent whiteboard.
To begin, I created a Facebook event and invited a majority of my friends. I instructed them to come to a designated classroom on any morning of the week, where I would be waiting with my acrylic sheet and camera. Under these same instructions last year, I had received 30 responses. This year? 70.
I encouraged students to think outside the box, and think outside the box they did. The responses ranged from one word answers like "I love to write" all the way to elaborate answers that brought into question the profundity of all of life and nature. I became excited to see how each person interpreted the prompt.

I constrained myself to a full film length of three minutes, which didn't leave very much room for ANYTHING. A line began forming behind the camera on a few of the days, so I started getting worried that I may have to disclude some of the answers because of the length restraint.
But much to my satisfaction, as I began editing, all of the responses fit seamlessly into the video. One week earlier, I had asked an unsigned band called The Oh Hello's if I could use one of their songs, and they obliged.

So, all in all, a week well spent. A big thank you goes out to all who contributed. Please enjoy Love, a transparent whiteboard film.
