Marion Family Urges Myocarditis Awareness After Teacher's Death in Classroom

A Marion couple hopes to raise awareness about myocarditis, a condition that claimed the life unexpectedly of aΒ family member.

Sarah Knight, a Marion native andΒ 25-year-old teacher,Β was discovered by a custodianΒ dead in her classroom in East Moline, IL,Β in September 2011, KCRG reports. It was very unexpected and rightΒ after a weekend home visit in Marion.

"No complaints, just a regular 'ole weekend, and (she)Β left on Sunday afternoon saying I'll call you," Susan Knight told the KCRG.Β β€œThen the next evening, on Monday night, at 10:30 p.m. we got the knock on the door.”

They later discovered Sarah had died ofΒ myocarditis. According to WebMD, "Affecting several thousand Americans each year, myocarditis is a disease marked by inflammation of theΒ heartΒ muscle (myocardium). The real numbers are hard to know because myocarditis often produces no symptoms."

Later this month, friends and family are putting on theΒ Sarah Knight Memorial Golf Tournament. The event is on Friday, June 21 at Hunter's Ridge Golf Course in Marion.Β

Proceeds from this event will help support the Sarah Knight Memorial Scholarship atΒ Western Illinois University, where Sarah attended college,Β and the Myocarditis Foundation, according toΒ www.sarahelizabethknight.com.
