Dehydration and Fall Prevention

Be proactive to prevent dehydration and falls for you or your loved one!

As people age, the chance of a fall that is significant or cause injury increases, so knowing how to prevent a fall is an important part of providing care to aging seniors. Falls can become even more of a threat due to the dizziness, blurred vision and confusion that come along with even moderate dehydration. Rather than living reactively, a proactive approach to... fall prevention can often make an emormous difference. So how do you plan ahead to prevent falls?

1. Hydrate and focus on preventing dehydration. The amount of water retained decreases with age so drinking water often during the day is inmportant.

2. Work on fall prevention activities year round, whether that means removing things that could be stumbling blocks or focusing on strength training. The better the body feels, the more apt you are to maintain balance.

Fall Prevention Activites:
-Know the side effects of medications; counteract effects that might cause falls.
-Keep bones strong with calcium and Vitamin D.
-Have vision and hearing checked regularly.
-Set up a plan to have a point of contact every day or as needed.
-Learn strengthening exercises and practice them daily.
-Identify physical limits...dizziness, weakness, and light headedness should have a plan in place such as holding onto something or being able to sit nearby.
