WHAT:
The 4,600 Urbandale-area Medicare beneficiaries and their caregivers are invited to attend “Memory Enrichment,” an event hosted by Care Improvement Plus, Iowa’s newest health plan solution for Medicare beneficiaries with chronic illnesses. Event attendees will participate in informative discussions about the challenges facing Iowa’s aging population and learn valuable information about memory enrichment.
WHY:
Iowa is home to more than 500,000 Medicare beneficiaries, 65 and older. Of those, more than 100,000 suffer from diabetes and/or heart failure. Chronic conditions like these are common in older adults – 62 percent of adults 65 and older suffer from two or more chronic conditions. That percentage rises to 70 percent for adults over 80. In large part because of the prevalence of chronic conditions, 90 percent of Medicare beneficiaries take prescription medications, and studies show that as many as 55 percent do not take them properly. Failure to follow prescription guidelines is a major factor that drives hospitalizations and worsening of conditions in older adults.
Memory impairments can make it very difficult to understand and remember medication instructions and regimens. Care Improvement Plus is hosting this event to help Medicare beneficiaries in the Urbandale area learn practical tips to improve their memory, which in turn can help improve their overall well-being and quality of life.
