Oh those cheesy Valentine commercials! Don’t just
bring her flowers or candy, buy her expensive jewelry or a brand new Lexus! And
have you noticed, those ads don’t urge women to give the man-in-your-life a
wonderful token of affection? What’s that about? Is Valentine’s Day merely an
occasion for men to feel guilty if they don’t break the bank in expressing
their undying love? Is that the real spirit of the day?
Each of us
has a deep longing to be loved and cherished, to know we’re making a difference
in someone else’s life. What if this February becomes a time to say affirming
things to the special people in your life? Not just to your Beloved, but to
your beloveds: your brother and sister, parent and older relative, friend or
buddy, mentor or teacher, even your own precious self. “I know I don’t often
say it, but I want you to know how much you mean to me. Thanks for your care. I
hope you know I’m here for you as well.” Now that would make St. Valentine
proud!
If saying
tender things to your loved ones doesn’t come easily, consider getting support
to risk being vulnerable. (Call the Des Moines Pastoral Counseling Center at
