Local Gift Shop Gives Taste and Design to Cookies

Cookies By Design is a shop off 100^th Street in the Deerfield Crossing strip mall that creatively designs and hand decorates cookies, cookie trays, cookie bouquets and gift baskets.

Cookies By Design has been open in Des Moines for 18 years and has been a franchise for 30 years.

Dan Hobson, owner of Cookies By Design, said the business is more of a gift shop.

“We bake cookies for gifts,” Hobson said. “When you give cookies you can custom design the message you want to get across, it doesn’t have the extra messages flowers give. If you are concerned, like many ladies are with giving to men, cookies are a hit.”

Hobson said Cookies by Design offers 12 gourmet cookies that have beaten most of their competition in a blind taste test competition.

“Our cookies have been shown to taste better and they are larger,” Hobson said. “We use a two-ounce cookie, where a lot of places will only use a half ounce or an ounce.”

Hobson said if someone were to order cookies this afternoon, they will bake them the next morning and deliver them.

“The decorated cookies we go through take a lot more expense and time to make them look good,” Hobson said. “We have our own icing and formula for the cookies. This gives them color that pops and really stands out.”

Hobson said Cookies By Design has gifts for people at many price points starting at $9 and going up.

Hobson said, “We will customize it with either words or pictures they want to have on that cookie as long as it doesn’t violate copyright laws.”

Cookies By Design does not offer sugar or gluten free cookies.
