Man Charged With Trying to Sexually Assault 12-Year-Old Urbandale Girl
Police have charged a 52-year-old West Des Moines man with assault with intent to commit sexual abuse. The reported victim is a 12-year-old Urbandale girl.

A 52-year-old West Des Moines man was arrested Tuesday for allegedly assaulting a 12-year-old Urbandale girl with the intent to commit sexual abuse, authorities said.
Michael Shumway was arrested by Urbandale Police after the girl and her mother reported the incident, said Officer Randy Peterson, public information officer for Urbandale.
The child was not hurt in the incident, police said.

Shumway is alleged to have had inappropriate contact with the girl he was watching at a location on 86th Street in Urbandale and another location in West Des Moines.
He was taken to the Polk County Jail and was released on $2,000 bond.

The charge is an aggravated misdemeanor. If convicted, Shumway faces a maximum sentence of two years in prison and a fine of $6,250 fine.
