Mourning Hostess: What's Better - Twinkies or Cupcakes?

Friday's announcement that Hostess Brands Inc. would be winding down operations has created a bit of hysteria in social media.

Both Hostess and Twinkies were trending on Twitter all day.

Also, several Save Twinkies groups have sprouted up on Facebook.

Twitter reaction near Urbandale was a bit mixed.

Amy Zeigler: If Twinkies disappeared (which is so ridiculously unlikely), would it really be a bad thing? Eat an apple instead.

When Hostess announced it would be going out of business and laying off more than 18,000 jobs, customers of the tasty treats were clearing store shelves across the United States.

According to KCCI News Channel 8, the Hostess outlet store on East University Avenue in Des Moines was advertising 50 percent off products, leaving some shelves bare before noon Friday.

The Irving, Texas, company filed for Chapter 11 protection in January.
