Sparks Pilates and Yoga Studio Teaches Fitness and Helps the Community
The new studio helped raise money to send a local ballet dancer to a competition in Europe.
Spark is a new barre Pilate and yoga studio located off 100th Street in the Deerfield Crossing strip mall, open since Dec. 7.
The studio offers different classes for women, men, older and younger people. Some classes are Barre Fusion Pilates, Barre Fusion FUNdamentals, Hot Power Vinyasa, Hot Power FUNdamentals, Yoga for Athletes, Shake Your Asana, and Rock Your Core. Both private and semi-private yoga/Pilates equipment sessions are available.
Pauline Tan, owner of Spark Barre Pilates & Yoga, said at her business the goal is to think about strength.

“We are very intentional about our workouts,” Tan said. “They are not just to make you come and burn and want to make you die when you leave. We really do think about building strength, flexibility and stability. We look at our clients and students when they come in and we really think about what they need to get stronger.”
Tan said she sees common issues in men and women, not generalizing the issues and incorporates them into the classes.

“We have a lot of clients with body issues or injuries so we are able to offer modifications so everyone can get a great workout and be safe,” Tan said.
Giving Back to Urbandale
Tan said the studio itself feels like a community. Recently, Spark put together a fundraising yoga event and raised $850 for Adrian Oldenburger, a ballet dancer, to compete in Europe. At the event people participated in yoga and listened to cellists perform live.
“Some people came just to listen to the music, some people did the yoga and some people couldn’t make it, but were part of the studio donation,” Tan said. “It was really fun to see the community come support someone they didn’t know and help him achieve his dream. They just wanted to help him get there and it was really fun.”
Tan said the fact that they raised so much money in a night shows the studio has great people.
“They care about each other, they ask each other where they have been if they haven’t came in a while,” Tan said. “It is a really inspiring place to be. It’s a lot of fun.”
Spark offers specials. The new student special is buy one month with unlimited classes for $99, the second month will be included. The other new student special is $20 for one week of unlimited group classes. These specials expire at the end of the month. For students in school, with a full-time I.D. it is $10 for a single group class. The regular price for a single group class is $15.
Tan said if anyone is unsure about coming in they should just try it.
“Where ever someone is at physically, emotionally or mentally, they should stop thinking about it and just come in and give it a go,” Tan said. “Sometimes just stepping in the door is the hardest part. I think they should come in and experience it, they can’t decide if they like it until they experience it. They will be inspired by the teachers and the people around them, it’s life changing.”
