UPDATE: Truck Driver Dies After Being Run Over by Rig at Urbandale Postal Station

A safety captain at the postal distribution center told the Des Moines Register changes in how trucks are taken to the loading dock has led to four similar accidents.

Changes in how trucks are taken to loading docks at an Urbandale postal distribution center played a role in a Thursday accident that killed a truck driver, according to the Des Moines Register.

Carl Magee, 46, of Pekin, Ill., reportedly was run over by his tractor-trailer after it slipped out of gear at a loading dock, the paper reported.

Magee died from his injuries shortly before 9 p.m. Friday at Iowa Methodist Medical Center, a hospital official told the newspaper.

According to an Urbandale police report, when the rig started to roll, Magee jumped onto the truck in order to stop it. Urbandale Officer Randy Peterson told the Register Magee then lost his balance and had his arm run over.

James Aten, the center’s safety captain, said in the past truck drivers would park their rigs, and a tractor-trailer operator would drive the trailer to the dock in a specialized truck for unloading.

Since drivers began backing their trucks into the dock a year and a half ago, Aten said there have been four runaway trucks at the center.

Magee drives for MCA Trucking and is not a postal service employee, the newspaper said.
