Urbandale Floral Shop's First Ever 'Prom Extravaganza'
An Urbandale Floral Shop has event to help prom-goers with everything they need for prom.
Flowers can make a beautiful prom dress pop or enhance a nice tuxedo, said organizers of the “Plaza Prom Extravaganza.”
“No outfit is complete without a flower,” said Sandy Taylor, owner of . ”It’s kind of like the icing on the cake.”
The free event will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Friday at Plaza Florists & Gifts, 6656 Douglas Ave., in Urbandale.

The event is designed to help teens, their friends and family members with corsages, boutonnieres, hair and makeup and much more.
“This is kind off like a fun girl’s day out,” said Melissa Burkheimer, a consultant who works on marketing with the floral shop.

Free prizes and refreshments will be provided. Organizers hope about 30-40 participants will attend.
Burkheimer said the event is a “one stop shop.” Urbandale High School will hold its prom on April 28. A portion of the proceeds from the event will benefit Urbandale High School's after prom events, she said.
“We’re really trying to make it special for them” Taylor said. “We’re doing the best we can to make the flowers be really beautiful on their gowns and tuxedos.”
Vendors range from hairstylists, jewelers to makeup artists, and include:
- Corsage samples from Plaza Florist
- Hairstylists from Salon 68
- Makeup from Dream Day Spa
- Jewelry and Purses from Vision of Beauty
- Nails by
Event-goers can look at samples and get a feel for what they might like and have the experts on hand to show them how best to use flowers and other accessories, Burkheimer said.
Special holders for the boutonnieres and special arrangements can be created for a one-of-a-kind look, Taylor said.
It’s best if teens and their mothers remember not to try to exactly match the color of their flowers to their dresses, Taylor said. Prom-goers should try to find complementary colors, such as red and green, blue and yellow and the popular blue and orange, which Taylor said are striking.
“It’s going to add more pop and be a lot more attractive,” Taylor said.
