Relay For Life and the American Cancer Society

American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Southern Dallas County Kick Off event set for January 22 at the YMCA in Waukee.

Did you know this year, more than 17,500 people will be diagnosed with cancer in Iowa? That's 48 people every day or nearly 2 people every hour of every day. This year, more than 6,300 cancer deaths are expected in Iowa. That is 18 people every day. Two thirds of all cancer is preventable!

In 2010, The American Cancer Society provided more than 5,300 Iowans with cancer information, programs and services to help make informed decisions and improve their quality of life. Over the past year, the Russell and Ann Gerdin ACS Hope Lodge in Iowa City provided 600 cancer patients and caregivers a no-cost home way from home during treatment, saving them more than $1million in lodging costs. The American Cancer Society is currently funding 11 cancer research grants at the University of Iowa and Iowa State University totaling more than $6.2 million.

Over 5,400 volunteers are helping ACS fight cancer in Iowa.  Would you like to help, too?
