Waukee Middle School Students Advance to State at National History Day Regional Competition

Twenty-six Waukee Middle School sixth through eighth graders participated in the regional national History Day Competition April 4.

Twenty-six Waukee Middle School sixth through eighth graders participated in the regional national History Day Competition April 4. This was a record number of participants for Waukee Middle School.

Seventh graders Jadon Haynes, Michael Adato and Ethan Adato will advance to compete at the state competition May 7.

National History Day (NHD) program helps students discover historical issues, ideas, people and events. Students work individually or collaboratively in groups of two to five students to produce documentaries, exhibits, performances, papers or websites.

NHD not only provides history teachers with an innovative teaching tool but also promotes a number of skills that students need for a successful future.

  • Builds research, comprehension, critical thinking, and presentation skills.
  • Integrates the arts, social sciences, and other disciplines into an historical presentation.
  • Fosters pride in and understanding of local, state, national, and world heritage.

  • Promotes a positive experience with history and learning.
