YMCA Youth Flag Football Event Creates Positive Atmosphere for Kids

Twenty-four YMCA youth flag football teams from the Greater Des Moines area participated in the third annual Bowl Game Day on Nov. 5.

Last Saturday, Nov. 5, the YMCA of Greater Des Moines held it's third annual Bowl Game Day at Valley Stadium to wrap up the fall 2011 flag football season.

Twenty-four teams ranging in grade level from first to sixth grade from the Walnut Creek YMCA, Waukee YMCA and South Suburban YMCA were all included. Each team played one game against an equal-skill level opponent.  At the end of their game, each child had their name announced over the loud speaker by their coach(es) and given a trophy, no matter the score of the game.

The YMCA feels very strongly about nurturing the potential of every child and through this event, we are able to create an atmosphere that allows for that development while giving the kids, coaches and parents great memories for years to come.

Included also in this event was a Punt, Pass, and Kick competition (even adults got into this one), free lunch for the kids and coaches, a visit from the Barnstormers' mascot/players and a presentation from the Iowa High School Rugby Association
showcasing the sport of rugby which is growing in popularity at an amazing
rate.

Look for more info in the spring on a possible youth rugby(non-contact) program next year!
