Committee Exploring Career Training School in Waukee

Similar facilities allow students to enroll in coursework that offers career training in developing industries.

The Waukee school board could hear a proposal as early as June to bring a career training school to the district, according to the Des Moines Register.

The board voiced support for the special school at a meeting last Wednesday, the Register reported. A committee of Waukee school district parents, administrators, teachers and residents are expected to explore options for a potential career training facility for high school students.

School district officials recently toured a similar facility in Blue Valley, Kan., the article said. The school allows some high school students to enroll in coursework that offers career training in developing industries, and students typically split their days between a traditional high school setting and the center campus.

Tony Thill, the Blue Valley school board president, his district’s building cost around $12.5 million to construct, according to the article.

Waukee Superintendent Dave Wilkerson, in addition to board members Jerry Ripperger and Larry Lyon, expressed their enthusiasm for the idea, the article said.
