Warriors Prevail Over The Black Raiders 28-21

Hard-nosed defense in the fourth quarter helps the Warriors hold on for their first victory of the season in their home opener, defeating the Black Raiders of Sioux City East, 28-21.

The Waukee Warriors came away with a hard fought victory against Sioux City East on Friday night, beating the Black Raiders 28-21 at Waukee Stadium. Waukee coach Scott Carlson called the Warrior’s victory against the Black Raiders a battle of attrition and said he was glad to walk away with the win.

“They gave us one heck of a battle,” Carlson said after the game as the Warriors streamed off the field, celebrating their first victory of the season.

Carlson credited the Warrior defense for stepping up to make some big plays to slow down Sioux City’s fast paced offensive attack.

“I’ve got to give our defense credit,” Carlson said. “Our kids listened and executed.”

After dropping their opener to Ankeny 31-20 last week, Carlson was happy to get back to .500 and avoid sitting in the same 0-2 hole the Warriors faced last year at this time.  Still, Carlson said the Warriors had plenty to work on as they head into next week’s matchup against with Southeast Polk.

“We let off the gas and we let them get back into the game,” Carlson said. “We need to find that knockout punch.”
