Waukee FamilyFest Offers Families Escape from Cabin Fever

If winter is beginning to feel like it won't end, Waukee Parks and Recreation has a fun break. Families can attend Waukee's first FamilyFest at no charge on Saturday.

The Waukee Parks and Recreation Department is hosting the first FamilyFest from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Jan. 19, at Point of Grace Church.

This event is free for families, say organizers.

There will be nearly two dozen businesses present -- including Waukee Patch -- with games, activities, and crafts for kids. There will also be inflatables, cookies, and juice provided.

The main goal of FamilyFest is bringing families together and getting kids out of the house in the winter, said organizer Sheri Penney, recreation supervisor with the city of Waukee.

"Waukee is such a great community with a lot of young families and a ton of community involvement. We have several festivals in the spring/summer with a great turnout and only Winterfest in the winter. I wanted to think of another community event that kids can participate in. We were able to implement FamilyFest this year due to rainy weather at WaukeeFest," she said.

"Last summer the inflatables at WaukeeFest were rained out so we decided to use some of the funds for WaukeeFest inflatables and apply them to another kid festival. We are hoping families take advantage of this great free event and we are hopeful for a large crowd," Penney said.

Activities for kids will include putt, putt golf, face painting, bean bag toss, Lego building, spin art, large motor activities, and a make and take science craft.

The activities will be geared for kids age 12 and younger.
