Waukee Seeking Designs for Proposed Recreation Complex

An August special election to pay for a Waukee recreation complex is likely, according to Waukee City Hall.

The Waukee Parks and Recreation Department is seeking bids on design services for the proposed recreation complex, according to the city's website

The city is seeking proposals from firms experienced with sports complex design projects. The City expects to complete phase one of a 60-acre recreation complex located along Sixth Street for $2 million. Land west of Sixth Street, between University Avenue and Hickman Road, could be used for the sports park.

The website says phase one will include the construction of four multi-use ball fields, concessions/restrooms, kids playground area, associated parking, and storm water management of the entire 60 acres.

Feature included for the facility would include youth and adult softball, Little League baseball, playground, concessions, public restrooms, parking, multipurpose open space, sports field lighting, and outdoor picnic areas.

The four complex fields will primarily be used by Waukee Parks and Recreation programs and weekend tournaments.

Waukee residents in August 2010 voted down a proposal to build an aquatic center near the area where the ball fields would be built.

To pay for the facility, an Aug. 6 bond referendum election is possible, the city says.
