Waukee Students Lay Wreath at Unknown Soldier's Tomb, Visit 911 Memorial in Washington, D.C.

More than 100 Waukee students and teachers are touring historic sites in the Washington, D.C., area this spring break week.

From the fun to the serious, a group of about 100 seventh-graders from both Waukee middle schools are spending spring break week in Washington, D.C.

Trip leader Nikole Monaco, a teacher at Waukee Middle School, has given Waukee Patch permission to share some of the photos the group is posting on a Tumblr blog. Nine other teachers from the schools are also on the trip.

Stops have included the Hard Rock Cafe and other fun places, along with the serious and historic.

Students helped lay a wreath at Arlington National Cemetery, and have taken in the history of the 911 memorial at the Pentagaon, plus the Lincoln, Jefferson, Washington, FDR and Martin Luther King Jr. Memorials. 

Other stops have included the Korean and Vietnam War memorials, and the U.S. Capitol. The group has also seen the American History Museum and the National Air and Space Museum.
