Another Valley Southwoods Student Dies; West Des Moines Superintendent Says Suicide Investigated
A staggering number of students in Iowa Youth Survey report having contemplated suicide.

Parents and guardians of students in West Des Moines Community Schools were informed today that freshman Justin Nimmo died at his home Thursday and that his death is being investigated as a suicide.
A month ago, another Valley Southwoods student, killed himself.
In January, after two Johnston teens killed themselves on the same weekend in apparently unrelated incident, mental health professionals Iowa Youth Survey statistics that showed 10 percent of eighth-grade students – 3,780 students – report having attempted suicide at least once.
Here is Superintendent Peter Ansingh’s letter to parents today:
I am deeply saddened to inform you of another tragic death of one of our Valley Southwoods students. Justin Nimmo died at home on Thursday, May 24. While no final determination has been made, the incident is currently under investigation as a suicide.
Justin has a sister Jaiden Wallander who is a third grader at Crestview Elementary, and a brother Koelten Grissom who is a senior at Valley High School. Our hearts are with Justin's family.
Students at Valley Southwoods were informed during first period today of their classmate's passing. Counselors will be available in supporting students today and will continue to be available as needed for any student who may wish to speak to someone. Students will be encouraged to reach out to family, friends and teachers for support. We are also encouraging students to follow their normal schedule when possible. To help ensure the safety of all of our students, regular attendance procedures will be followed during this time of grief and sadness.
As arrangements are released regarding visitation and funeral services, we will provide that information to students. In addition, we will be providing resource information this afternoon to assist our community as we head into the long weekend.
Please know that we care very deeply about your student. Do not hesitate to contact the district offices, your school administrator or counselor with concerns or questions you may have.
At this time, we ask you to join us in keeping Justin's family and friends in your thoughts and prayers.
