As If Being In Jail Weren’t Enough, West Des Moines Man Loses Again
A bad week gets worse for a man jailed on a driving-while-barred charge.

How’s this for a kick in the pants for a guy who’s already smarting?
Two days after Juan Manuel Garces Jr., 24, of West Des Moines was put in jail on a charge of driving while barred, someone allegedly broke into his apartment and stole a safe.
Of course, it wasn't empty. Inside were 10,000 clams – dollars, that is – and ignition keys for three cars.
The burglary was reported to on May 31 by the mother of Garces' children. She heard about it from his buddy, who noticed pry marks on the door of his apartment.
Sure enough, when Officer Nathan Ladwig investigated, he found marks on the door in the area of the dead bolt and doorknob. Ladwig wrote in his report that when he contacted Garces, “he stated that he was incarcerated and did not think he would be released in the near future.”

Garces is being held in the Polk County Jail on $5,000 cash bond. He faces a dozen charges, including five counts of driving while barred habitual offender.
The missing ignition keys fit a 1995 Mustang, a 2007 Chrysler 300 and a 1985 Pontiac Grand Prix. The Grand Prix was impounded by police when Garces was arrested for allegedly driving while barred on May 29. The status of the other two vehicles is unknown.
Garces reportedly told police that none of the vehicles is registered to him because he doesn’t have a valid driver’s license.
