Get Rid of Hazardous Waste Right Outside Your Door

Metro Waste Authority offers houseside collection of hazardous Waste.

West Des Moines residents can now get rid of household hazardous waste right outside their doorsteps. "The City of West Des Moines is working with Metro Waste Authority to offer house-side collection of household hazardous materials," says Reo Menning, public affairs director. "This program conveniently disposes of unused home and lawn care products, typically the ones that seem to stockpile under your sink or in your garage. They are harmful to small children, who don't always know the difference between Gatorade and wood polish."

How to Sign Up
West Des Moines residents can sign up on an as-needed basis from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday, at West Des Moines Public Works, 560 South 16th St., West Des Moines. For a $25 per use fee, residents receive:

  • One or two 12-gallon bins (both must be set out for $25 fee)
  • Handling instructions and list of accepted items
  • Large plastic bags for items too large for the bin (available upon request)

How it Works
Once residents are ready for pickup, they call to schedule collection, which occurs the second Friday of the month. Learn more about the program and what's accepted and not accepted.
