Maplewood Wellness Center Offers Full Suite of Chiropractic Services

When chiropractor Dr. Lindsey Calvert-Downey opened up her own business in West Des Moines, she worked hard to create an environment that she'd want to visit as a client.

When the pain in his back got so bad that Odus Ross couldn’t get out to play left field with the guys on his baseball team, he knew he needed to find a chiropractor.

Ross, from Indianola, has been on permanent disability for years after a serious work related accident.

Finding a chiropractor able to successfully treat his injuries proved to be challenge, however, and Ross found he was spending a lot of time trying out new chiropractors. Then he met Dr. Lindsey Calvert-Downey at the Maplewood Wellness Center, 4949 Pleasant St., Suite 101, in West Des Moines.

“The people here are very friendly and very willing to help, they’re concerned about the type of pain you’re in,” Ross said.

Under Calvert-Downey’s treatment, Ross’s condition improved considerably. He admitted that he’s tried other chiropractors since meeting Calvert-Downey, but none of them have had the same success. Ross has also been impressed by Calvert-Downey’s willingness to refer him to a pain specialist, something that he hasn’t found in other chiropractors he’s tried.

“She’ll take it seriously and decide if she can or can’t help, and if she can’t help she can get you to someone who can,” Ross said.

Calvert-Downey may have graduated from the Northwestern University College of Health Sciences, but she’s an Iowa girl at heart. The Urbandale native gave her business the same name as her grandparent’s century farm, where she now resides.

“I wanted to be close to my family again,” Calvert-Downey said.

After graduating in 2008, Calvert-Downey knew that she wanted to open her own clinic in the Des Moines metro area, and after finding the perfect location in West Des Moines she opened her doors 2½ years ago. Her goal with the Maplewood Wellness Center is to offer a full range of services that other chiropractors can’t match. To meet that goal Calvert-Downey keeps a licensed massage therapist, Aleyna Brown, and an esthetician, Chey Anne Young, on staff.

“I didn’t want to be just another chiropractic clinic,” Calvert-Downey said. “With all the services that we provide, it makes us more than just another chiropractic clinic.”

In designing the clinic, Calvert-Downey said her goal was to make it a place that she would want to come to, and to work hard to treat her patients the same way she would want to be treated.

“I’ve set the clinic up specifically to be patient-friendly,” Calvert-Downey said. “Every appointment is 30 minutes so that I have time to interact with each patient.”

As patients come into the office, Calvert-Downey is quick to offer them a freshly baked cupcake or a bag of Halloween candy. She’s also quick to point out the numerous services her staff offers, something she feels patients often overlook.

“I’m amazed that we have people who have been coming here for six months to a year and they’re shocked to find out that we have acupuncture and massage,” Calvert-Downey said.

While she loves being her own boss, Calvert-Downey admitted that it’s stressful at times. She’s been working hard to make sure both Brown and Young are able to enjoy the same success that she’s had.

“I feel a lot of pressure to make sure that they succeed,” Dr. Calvert-Downey said.

When she’s not at work Calvert-Downey enjoys working with her two show horses, travelling with her husband, Chris, and trying out new restaurants in the metro area.
