Cedar Rapids Sizzlers Win 9th Annual Granny Basketball Tournament

The Cedar Rapids Sizzlers won the Granny Basketball tournament today in West Des Moines, Iowa by beating the Hot Pink Grannies of Des Moines in the championship game by a score of 62-39.

Members of the Sizzlers, who had an undefeated season, include Lola Reisner, Susan Cahalan, Diana Marker, Linda Jennings, Charlotte Emerson, Linda Toerper, Lois Henderson, Roberta Lowery, Linda Mceowen, Lori Neblung, Dana Daves, Susan Hartley and Kathleen Sanders. Members of the Hot Pink Grannies, who had a 5-1 season include Carolyn Sutton, Judith Harms, Rebecca Webb, Linda Burke, Nancy Henning, Pamela Snyder-Wymer, Rita Leitzinger, Roxanne Menke, Jewell Chapman, Karen Gideon, Patsy Tallman and Mary Kay France.

The tournament was held as part of the 2013 Iowa Senior Olympics, a multi- sport event which attracted athletes age 50 and up from around the state and from such places as Ruidoso, New Mexico. Some of the other sports included bicycling, swimming, table tennis, Pickleball, Scrabble®, golf, track and field, tennis and horseshoe pitching.

Granny Basketball teams play the traditional six-on-six version of the game and wear 1920s-era uniforms. A team can have two guards, two starters and two centers. No running is allowed, although “hurrying” is permitted.
