On the 13th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, an Urbandale retirement community paid special tribute to first responders in the area who often risk their lives to save others.

On Thursday, September 11, Deerfield hosted its second annual BBQ luncheon for area firefighters, police officers and emergency personnel and several departments from cities in the Des Moines metro attended the event.

Residents and staff at the retirement community took the opportunity to personally thank first responders for their compassion and dedication to serving others. In addition to serving them a lunch featuring smoked BBQ and homemade desserts, Deerfield residents and staff also gave the firefighters and officers personal thank you notes.
