Don't Sweat what You Can't Change, Be True to Yourself, Be Kind to Everyone and Other Lessons from Dad

We asked some of the shopkeepers and employees at Valley Junction shops to tell us the best lesson their dad ever taught them.

Mr. Dalbey was my dad's brother. Dad always said that when someone addressed him with a courtesy title.

"Oh, you mean Fletcher," he'd say. "He's Mr. Dalbey. I'm just George."

Dad was big on metaphors. So when he said that the person who cleans the operating room is no less important than the surgeon, what he meant was that even though the surgeon might have gifted hands and a sharp mind, all that skill was for naught if the custodian had done a thorough job.

I learned a lot about teamwork because of that, and how everyone has a job to do for a system to work properly. More important, I learned not to put myself above others.

What's the most important thing you learned from your dad? I asked around Urbandale and got some cool responses. Watch the video, then tell us about your dad in the comments or tell us in a blog. >>> What Does Your Dad Mean to You? >>>
