Get Your Country on for Christmas in West Des Moines

Singer-songwriters Joey Martin Feek and Rory Lee Feek help kick off the holiday season in West Des Moines Nov. 27 when their “Farmhouse Christmas” Tour comes to the Val Air Ballroom, 301 Ashworth Road,

Performing as Joey + Rory, the husband and wife duo will bring bits of their own family’s traditions to the stage, Joey said. She and her husband met at a songwriter’s gathering 12 years ago in Nashville, where Rory had been writing songs for about 15 years.

Two of his best-known songs are “Some Beach,” which country sensation Blake Shelton turned into a No. 1 hit, and “Cheater, Cheater,” which they’ll give a holiday spin, Joey said.

The show will feature selections from the Joey + Rory “Farmhouse Christmas” album, which includes eight original songs, as well as holiday favorites like “Away in the Manger” and “Blue Christmas” recorded with the couple’s singer-songwriter friends in Nashville. Merle Haggard made a cameo appearance on the album with “If We Make it Through December.”

Joey said the tour is a way for the couple to share how they celebrate Christmas and the concert will include a running dialogue about all the events leading up to the holiday — shopping, cooking, the diets they’ll go on when the holidays are over, and the resolutions that will be broken a few weeks into 2012.

The tour winds down Dec. 23, and the couple will return to Nashville to celebrate their own traditions — candlelight services on Christmas Eve, a family gift exchange Christmas morning and a big meal in the evening.

“Our Christmas is just being with family and friends, really remembering what Christmas is all about, reading from the Bible, and spending that time together in quietness,” Joey said.
