It Rocks, Regulars Call It Charlie’s and It’s the Best Place in West Des Moines to Roll With March Madness

The winner in for the best place to watch March Madness has a fiercely loyal customer base, including Mark Cooper, who gave it a five-star review.

No wonder. The , in the city's east side, is known for neighborhood friendliness and mixed juice drinks so fresh you’d swear owner Charlie Sovich picked the fruit himself.

“The Filling Station (Charlie’s) rocks,” Cooper wrote on his review.

The Filling Station finished ahead in voting of and , which were No. 2 and No. 3, respectively.

The Filling Station, located at 305 Grand Ave., is in the "old" part of West Des Moines. A classic gas station in a former life, it’s now a townie dive bar, a high compliment, according to the regulars.

It’s also a different place for different people.

Televisions, pool tables and dart games give it a sports bar feel, but there’s also a small dance floor to rub bellies with your baby to an old favorite on the jukebox and a patio where you can raise a pint and spin a yarn on a hot summer night.

The Filling Station is open daily from 3 p.m. to 2 a.m.
