Ragtime. Stride. Swing. Bop. Avant Garde. It all blends together under
the hands of pianist Dave Burrell. His dynamic compositions, with blues and
gospel roots recall the tradition of Jelly Roll Morton, James P. Johnson and
Duke Ellington, as well avant garde composers Thelonious Monk and John
Coltrane. This is modern jazz played with great respect and reverence for the
music that preceded it. Dave will be joined for part of this performance with
drummer Joe Chonto and saxophonist David Tamura. Meet-the-artists reception to follow concert.
