Large West Des Moines Employer AvivaUSA Sells Overnight for $1.55 Billion

New entity says it's committed to staying in West Des Moines, but it's unclear if work force will be trimmed.

AvivaUSA, one of West Des Moines’ top employers, sold overnight to a Bermuda-based holding company for $1.55 billion.

Rumors that the company, which employs about 1,400 people in West Des Moines, have persisted for months. According to the announcement, reported today in the Des Moines Register, AvivaUSA will be combined with Delaware-based Athene Annuity & Life Insurance Co, the buyer’s primary operating subsidiary.

The new name will be Athene USA, and it will continue to occupy the $135 million headquarters Aviva built in 2010.

Unclear is how many jobs may be affected by the purchase. Aviva employed 1,800 across the country.
