No Way, West Des Moines Police Say

Shoplifting case at Jordan Creek Younkers store blamed on post-traumatic stress disorder.

West Des Moines Police got an unusual request one day last week when they arrested a woman on shoplifting charges.

After Officer Matthew Granzow arrested Sharon Ann Bright, 56, of 14001 Lake Pointe Drive on shoplifting charges, she allegedly told him to “shoot her … and asked if she went for my gun if I would shoot her,” according to his report on file at the West Des Moines Police Department.

The incident occurred inside the  store at  about 5 p.m. June 1.

Bright reportedly blamed the alleged theft of nearly $350 in merchandise on post-traumatic stress disorder.

“She said that she has PTSD and that she knows what she did was wrong, but she cannot help it because of the PTSD,” Granzow wrote.

Concerned about her well-being Granzow said he questioned Bright about remarks that “she wanted me to hurt her.” Once they left the store, he wrote, “she calmed down and told me that she did not mean anything by those statements.”
