On the Move and Eating Healthier, Phenix Students Win Gold

The U.S. Department of Agriculture awarded Phenix Elementary School a gold medal for its participation in the HealthierUS School Challenge, a voluntary certification initiative established in 2004 to recognize schools participating in the National School Lunch Program that have created healthier school environments through promotion of nutrition and physical activity.
The award was presented Friday at a student assembly in which owa Department of Education Director Jason Glass made remarks.
Nutrition education and physical education and activity are part of Phenix students’ daily activities, according to a story on the West Des Moines Community Schools web site. They also are part of the Live Healthy Iowa initiative, which brings together friends, families, businesses and communities in team-based wellness challenges designed to promote positive lifestyle change.
