One Killed in Rush-Hour Crash Along Interstate 35/80 Near University Friday

A car crash near the University Avenue exit along Interstate 35/80 in West Des Moines Friday afternoon killed one person, authorities said.

One person was killed and four people were injured Friday afternoon in a two-vehicle accident on Interstate Highway 35/80 near the University Avenue bridge in West Des Moines Friday afternoon, authorities said.

Police told the Des Moines Register a car and a van collided at about 4:50 p.m. in the southbound lanes of the interstate near the University Avenue bridge.

Traffic along the interstate was still slow near the site at 6 p.m. The red car in which the person died was on the west side of the interstate with a sheet draped over it as traffic passed.

Three accident victims who were in the car were taken to a hospital. The driver of the van, who was alone in the vehicle, was also taken to the hospital, said Lt. Jim Barrett of the West Des Moines Police Department.

The cause of the accident is unknown, Barrett told the Register.

Authorities have not released the names of those involved in the accident or the condition of those hospitalized.
