The Tavern Pizza, 205 Fifth St., 255-9827: The Tavern Pizza was founded in Historic Valley Junction in 1945. In 1950 Tavern Pizza added The Grinder sandwich to their menu and it has been a local favorite ever since. The Grinder is an Italian sausage simmered in a special sauce, served on a baked hoagie bun, topped with mozzarella cheese and available for $7.75. Other menu items include pizzas, burgers, and pastas. The locally owned restaurant has a second location, Tavern Pizza and Pasta Grill, 1755 50th St., 223-6700.

Coach’s Pizza, 560 S. Prairie View Drive, 223-2233: Coach's Pizza is a casual pizza restaurant located in the West Glen development. They sell pizza by the slice or pie as well as salads, pasta dishes, sandwiches, appetizers and sides. There is also a limited bar serving beer and wine.

El Chisme Taqueria & Pizzeria, 225 Fifth St., 255-5756: El Chisme Taqueria & Pizzeria is a local Mexican-Italian restaurant owned by chef and former U.S. Marine Jesus Ojeda and his wife, Juanita. The restaurant tries to separate itself from the typical Mexican restaurant by offering casual upscale dining with dishes made from scratch. El Chisme offers Mexican staples such as tortas, tacos, burritos and menudo, along with gourmet pizzas and other Italian favorites. The full-service bar is known for its homemade margaritas and Mexican beer.

Paradise Pizza Cafe, 2025 Grand Ave., 222-9959: Paradise Pizza has been open for 20 years and is one of the oldest businesses in West Des Moines. Its owners built the restaurant by themselves after buying the land. A clean look from the outside and the unique look of the inside contribute to a nice dining experience.

Angelo’s Pizza, 1310 Grand Ave., 225-4114: A locally owned restaurant that sells thin-crust pizzas, as well as a extensive menu of Italian pasta dishes and sides. It also has a selection of Italian cold cut sandwiches and other deli sandwiches available on crispy Rotella bread, a local favorite. Delivery is available for most areas of West Des Moines.

Leonetti’s Bella Cucina in the Palm, 1238 Eighth St., 223-0801: Leonetti's Bella Cucina in the Palm is an Italian restaurant with a full bar and live music performances. This establishment offers appetizers and entrees, including fried pepper rings, sandwiches, pasta dishes, pizza and salads.

Nick-N-Willy’s Pizza, 165 S. Jordan Creek Pkwy., 223-5700: Nick-N-Willy's is a regional chian of carry-out pizza sellers known for their premium ingredients and delicious dough. Nick-N-Willy's also sells salads, hot wings, calzones, focaccia sandwiches and desserts. Signature pizzas include the Big Kahuna, Aegean, fresh jalepeño and Roman feta pesto.  

Felix & Oscar’s, 4801 Westown Pkwy., 457-1000: Felix and Oscars is a Chicago-style pizza restaurant with deep-dish offerings and Italian-inspired entrees. Besides pizza, Felix and Oscars does pasta dishes, lasagna, appetizers, salads and soups, as well as beer, wine and cocktails.

Bravo! Cucina Italiana, 101 S. Jordan Creek Pkwy., 225-0660: Bravo! Cucina Italiana is a regional chain of fine dining Italian restaurants. Decorated to simulate a quaint Roman ruin, the Jordan Creek Town Center location sits on the edge of the mall's ornamental lake and features wonderful views from its patio. The menu offers classic Italian entrees, lobster ravioli, braised beef ravioli, gourmet pizza and more. Fine Italian wines are available by the glass or bottle.

Breadeaux Pizza, 1300 50th St., 222-1211: Breadeaux Pizza is a regional chain of pizza delivery restaurants based out of St. Joseph, MO Popular in smaller Iowa towns, Breadeaux is known for its prompt delivery, coupons and specialty pizzas. It specializes in thin-crust pizza and also offers a selection of appetizers and breadsticks.

Papa Murphy’s Take N Bake Pizza, 1960 Grand Ave., 440-7272: Papa Murphys Take N Bake Pizza has pizzas for takeout meant to be cooked at home. The store offers a variety of crusts and toppings, ranging from veggie specials to meat lovers. The shop also has a few salads and desserts.

Villa Fresh Italian Kitchen, 101 Jordan Creek Pkwy., 223-7725: Villa Fresh Italian Kitchen is a food court pizzeria located in the Jordan Creek Town Center. Part of a national chain of casual Italian and pizza restaurants, Villa Fresh serves New York-style pizza, pasta dishes, lasagna and breadsticks.  

Sbarro, 1551 Valley West Drive, 225-9948: Sbarro is located in the food court of the Valley West Mall. The chain serves pizza and Italian American comfort food, including salads, pastas, calzones and more. Popular items include oversized slices of pizza, with toppings ranging from plain cheese to mixed vegetable and meat lovers specials.

Northern Lights Pizza, 1237 Grand Ave., 271-9731: This is a branch of the regional chain. Northern Lights Pizza is a pizza restaurant that specializes in delivery and takeout. This location in particular is small, not big enough for more than a few chairs. The staff here says that customers like the chain's wide delivery area, speedy service, and variety of offerings, like their taco pizza or alfredo chicken pizza, as well as sides like wings and breadsticks.A second location is at 6750 Westown Pkwy., 224-4444.

Casey’s Carry-Out Pizza, multiple locations, including 2125 Grand Ave., 223-3040, and 108 8th St, 274-1392: The pizza business is part of a chain of general stores and gas stations. The pizza is offered as pies or slices, with toppings including cheese, sausage and pepperoni. Specialty combinations include taco pizza and breakfast pizza.

Chuck E. Cheese’s, 1431 22nd St., 223-9430: This restaurant and entertainment center is popular for kids' birthday parties, Chuck E. Cheese's offers up a menu of pizza, wings, sandwiches and other family-friendly food. The entertainment is geared toward children, with plenty of video games, rides and prizes to keep kids busy.

Papa John’s Pizza, 5930 Ashworth Road, 440-2727: This is a branch of the national chain. Papa John's Pizza is a takeout and delivery pizza restaurant located in central West Des Moines. Papa Johns is known for its thick, bready dough, fresh toppings and dipping sauces like garlic butter and tomato sauce.

Little Caesar’s Pizza, 1220 Grand Ave., 224-2929: Little Caesers Pizza is a national chain of restaurants popular for its commercials featuring a Roman-inspired mascot shouting, "Pizza, Pizza!" Its signature pies include Hawaiian and veggie varieties, and breadsticks and dipping sauces are also available.

Godfather’s Pizza, 5919 Ashworth Road, 226-8880: Godfather's Pizza is a regional, Italian American eatery chain. It offers a menu of pizzas, salads and desserts. The restaurant's 30-year history is remembered for its silly commercials. This location does not offer delivery; it does feature dine-in and take-out options. It’s also the restaurant chain founded by former Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain.
