Playground to be Named for Slain West Des Moines Realtor Ashley Okland
Playground to be built by Young Variety and Variety – The Children's Charity will be the first in the Des Moines area built especially for special needs children.

A playground being built by a charity that was a favorite slain West Des Moines real-estate agent Ashley Okland will be named in her honor.
The Des Moines Park and Recreation board is seeking input about the project, which is being built by Young Variety and Variety – The Children’s Charity, the Des Moines Register reported.
The playground, which will be called the Ashley Okland Star Playground. will be built at Ewing Park, 5300 Indianola Ave., and will be the first in the city to be built specifically with special needs children in mind. Okland had been a Young Variety board member.

She was shot and killed in April 2011 while showing a model town home in West Des Moines. Her murder has never been solved and police continue to investigate.
The Des Moines Park and Rec board will discuss the project more at a meeting at 5 p.m. Aug. 27 at Des Moines City Hall, 400 Robert D. Ray Drive.
