West Des Moines Police Blotter: Thefts Range from Car to Avon Products to TV

All information below is provided by police in incident reports and reflects when the incident occurred, not when an arrest was made or charges were filed. Charges do not always result in convictions.

Dec. 5
Alexander Edward Wonio, 32, of 6255 Beechtree Drive was charged with public intoxication and simple assault at Wellman’s Pub and Rooftop, 597 Market Place.

Dec. 4
Camille Dionne Sirls, 28, of 3050 University Ave., was arrested on an outstanding warrant for fifth-degree theft after police were called to Village Inn, 2300 University Ave., to respond to a possible fight at the restaurant.

Police are investigating vandalism to a vehicle while it was parked at West Glen Town Center, 5525 Mills Civic Pkwy., Saturday night or early Sunday morning. A knife or cutting instrument and a blunt object were used to scratch and damage the left side of a 2012 Mercedes Benz automobile owned by Joseph Michael Thomas, 23, of 6001 Creston Ave., Des Moines. causing about $9,000 damage.

Employees at Mimi’s Cafe, 490 S. 68th St., reported three counterfeit $20 bills, all with the same serial number, were in the day’s bar receipts.

Ali Aljenabi, 43, of 1110 Fifth St., reported that he sold a 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche to a friend, Robert Alexander Tilley, 35, of Clear Lake, for $2,100 on Nov. 28. He signed over the title before cashing the check and when he presented it for payment, it had been cancelled by Tilley, who had registered the vehicle in his name.

James Dillon Norris, 18, of 2600 Boston Ave., Des Moines, was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia after police stopped his vehicle at the 120 mile marker of Interstate 80 at 3:10 a.m. Sunday. Police stopped the vehicle because the license plate light was burned out.

A 17-year-old Urbandale youth was charged with striking an unattended vehicle in a Jordan Creek Town Center parking lot, 101 Jordan Creek Pkwy., after mall security reported a hit-and-run accident.

Dec. 2
Melvin James Glover, 24, of 1039 19th St., Des Moines, was charged with disorderly conduct after he allegedly tripped a fire alarm at Chapel Ridge Condos, 210 S. 41st St.

Dennis Matthew Laws, 43, of 5931 Vista Drive, was charged on an outstanding Adel Police Department warrant for third-degree harassment after police stopped his vehicle because tail lights were not operational.

Norma Dawn Papenberg, 28 of 8175 Ashworth Road, was charged with operating while under the influence, first offense, and striking a fixed object (sign post) as she was westbound on the Jordan Creek Parkway exit to Interstate 80.

Police investigated the theft of a 50-inch television from a truck parked overnight at 3401 Glenwood Drive. The owner of the appliance, Joe Eric Rasmussen, 36, of that address said he and a friend carried the television to his truck and placed it in the rear seat, and thought the vehicle had been locked. Police found there had been no forced entry.

Jeffrey Dale Reese, 24, of Carlisle, was charged with public intoxication, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia after an employee of Fabrik, a store at Jordan Creek Town Center, reported an intoxicated man stumbling across the parking lot.

Anthony Burke, owner of Lands of Expression snow removal service, Runnells, reported the theft of the front door of a white Bobcat model S250 skid loader stored on a trailer at 2800 University Ave. He told West Des Moines police that he had located a witness who told him that an unknown man wearing a black coat and black hat and driving a black or dark blue Ford F150 pickup was loitering near the trailer in the area where the skid loader had been stored.

Darcy Diane Pech, 42, of 2340 E.P. True Pkwy., reported she was carrying two shipping boxes of Avon products into her apartment building, when she set one of the boxes down outside the door and carried the remainder into her residence. She told police that when she returned to the location in less than five minutes, the second box was gone. The box contained various cosmetics and home goods, but Pech could not put a value on them.

Paul Jacob Deshetler, 18, and Jacob Paul McCauley, 19, both of 225 Prairie View Drive, were arrested on Waukee Police Department warrants for fifth-degree theft after police were called to 6699 Vista Drive to investigate a report of two men sleeping in the stairwell of the apartment building.

Nov. 30
Daniel John Hobbiebrunken, 19, of 2723 Country Side Drive, was charged with possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. Officer Matt McCarty observed Hobbiebrunken driving westbound on Railroad Avenue after leaving a convenience store. He was aware of his identity given his previous police history. After learning Hobbiebrunken’s driver license was suspended for nonpayment of an Iowa fine, McCarty performed traffic stop and charged Hobbiebrunken with driving while suspended.

Henry Patricio Coello-Cordova reported third-degree burglary at his home, 414 34th St., after drawers in rooms were rummaged through and $9,000 in cash and three paychecks totaling $2,000 were missing from a dresser. Residents told police the front and back door to the residence are always left unlocked. The checks were from McDonald’s and Latin King, and no attempt had been made to cash them.

A West Des Moines woman reported that she had received a call from Citibank’s fraud department telling her that a credit card had been applied for in her name over the Internet and had been activated. It had not yet been used when the theft was reported.

Ronald Carle Hampton, 20, of Stanhope, was arrested at 250 Mills Civic Pkwy. on a Hamilton County warrant for failure to appear charge for a probation violation.

A 77-year-old West Des Moines man reported that he had been swindled. He told police that on Nov. 28, someone claiming to be from Bank of America informed him his online account was being enhanced with a new login security. He was asked to log into the bank’s website. He did so, and provided personal information, including his Social Security number to the fradulent website. On Nov. 30, he received a phone call frorm the bank’s abuse hotline advising him there was a strong possiblity his bank account had been compromised. An unauthorized withdrawal of $2,835.078 from his account had been made. He met with Bank of America, 3400 Westown Parkway, and while he was there, an attempt was made to withdraw an additional $13,500 from his account.

Police are continuing their investigation of an alleged rape at 3050 Universty Ave. Police interviewed an 18-year-old Des Moines woman at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. The woman said a friend convinced her to come to an apartment to hang out. She was alone in the unlocked apartment when she said two males entered the apartment and assaulted her.

Nov. 29
Shawn Michael West, 36, of 3848 40th St., Des Moines, was charged with possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia in 500 block of Valley West Drive after police stopped him for failure to wear his seat belt.

Ronnie Lee Brown, 25, 2330 E.P. True Pkwy., reported that when he reported to a new job as a forklift operator for FedEx in Des Moines, he was told that a background check revealed he had a driving while intoxicated charge in Callaway County, MO. He told police he’d never been to Callaway County and alleged that someone used his name, date of birth and other information in Missouri. He spoke with Missouri authorities and has filed an identity case theft with West Des Moines police.

A 52-year-old West Des Moines man reported that someone fraudulently used his credit card/ATM card to make a $74.19 online purchase from Best Buy.

A West Des Moines woman, Christi Dawn Young, 51, 5712 Gallery Court, reported theft by deception to police. She received an email stating that a friend’s cousin was sick in Spain and needed money. The email asked her to wire money from any Western Union Bank to a Karen Spellman in Madrid Spain. Young sent a $300 check. She told police she received a thank-you email asking for an additional $1,000. Before she wired that money, Young’s friend told her that her email account had been hacked.
