Romney Rakes In $1.8 to $2 Million at West Des Moines Fundraiser

The haul at the Glen Oaks Country Club fundraiser was the largest ever in Iowa, the Romney campaign chairman says.

was one for the record books.

Republicans raised about $2 million for presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney at a private fundraiser at Glen Oaks, a gated community in West Des Moines.

David Oman, Romney’s Iowa campaign chairman, told the Des Moines Register that more money was raised Tuesday than ever before at an Iowa political event.

The fundraiser was thrown by well-heeled local glitterati with a reputation for making things happen in the Des Moines metro area and two of Iowa’s political heavy hitters, Gov. Terry Branstad and U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley.

Sponsorships brought in about $900,000.

About 280 tickets were sold for $2,500 to $75,000, boosting the total take to $1.8 million to $2 million, according to a Romney campaign spokesman.

“You wouldn’t have written a check because the hors d’oeuvres weren’t that good. I mean they’re very good, but they’re not good enough to pay what you paid,” Romney told the guests, according to the Register’s report. “I mean they’re like $100 apiece for a little piece of cheese or whatever. You’re not doing it for me, you’re not doing it for the party, you’re doing it for the country.”
