Roosters’ Australian Football Home Opener Saturday in West Des Moines

Well, cockle-doodle-doo. Who knew the metro area had an Austrailian football team – and that throwing the ball is against the rules?

Whether sports or art is your thing, or you’re just interested in keeping your identity safe, West Des Moines has something for you this weekend. Here are Patch’s Five Picks.

Saturday: Take it Down Under

Forget what you think you know about football as the Des Moines Roosters open their 2012 season at noon Saturday at , 1601 Vine St.. The objective of this game is to score points by passing the ball through a goal, usually by kicking. Players can use any part of their body they want to move the ball, and must intermittently touch or bounce the ball. They cannot throw it, however.

The fun starts at noon with a game against the Kansas City Power, and continues at 2 when the Roosters take on the Ohio Valley River Rats.

If Australian football isn’t your thing, the Des Moines Menace host Indiana at 4:30 p.m. at . For the first time in Menace history, there will be a women’s match preceding the men’s match at 7:30. For more information, visit the Des Moines Menace website.

, 1601 22nd St., is holding its annual Free Shred Day from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday. Show up to the bank’s parking lot with up to 100 pounds of personal or small-business identity-sensitive documents for on-site destruction.

, 5445 Mills Civic Pkwy., is holding a trunk show. Artists will help customers design their own heirloom pieces an will waive the usual 10 percent customization fee. The trunk show begins at noon and continues until 4 p.m.

Sunday: Ogle It
Wrap up the weekend in with the Spring Art Market in , a juried show offering paintings, prints, sculpture, photography, pottery, jewelry, furniture, clothing, stained glass, fiber and much more.

This perennial spring favorite also includes musical entertainment, children’s art activities, artists’ demonstrations, food vendor booths – everything a street party needs. Many businesses and restaurants will also be open.
