Sen. Pat Ward Reports: Imagining the Possibilities for Iowa Starts With Property Tax Reform

A common theme among business leaders is that the cost of doing business is increasing dramatically.

By Sen. Pat Ward

Imagine an Iowa that is the envy of the nation, an Iowa that provides endless possibilities for our children; an Iowa that is a destination for young people looking for a rewarding career and an exceptional place to raise a family.

What are the strengths of the Republican-backed property tax reform proposal before the Senate? The pitfalls? Discuss in comments.

But the simple fact is – if we want that kind of Iowa, if we want growth, we must change the way we’ve always done things. We must create a business climate that is stronger than our competition.

We need tax and regulatory reform that will spur job growth and help families, and that starts with passing property tax reform this session.

As I’ve spoken with business leaders throughout our community, one common theme that has prevailed is that the cost of doing business is increasing drastically. With over-burdensome government rules and a tax climate that stifles growth, I will continue to fight for good legislation to ensure Iowa is the best state in the country to do business.

And I don’t think we can stop at our nation’s borders – I want the world to know Iowa is open for business. We want entrepreneurs from across the globe to make their home in Iowa.

Our work to rebuild Iowa’s economy is far from complete, but together, we can and will make Iowa the envy of the world. No surprises, no fine print. Iowans deserve an effective, efficient government that fights for them day in and day out. That’s what I work for, that’s what I believe in. Together we can make our state more competitive and give our people a brighter, more optimistic future.

More Good News in Education, Mental Health Reform

On the bright side, we are well on our way toward making Iowa’s education system world class once again.

We all know quality education is top on the list for employers and families alike. A proposal is now moving through the legislature that requires greater accountability for teachers and students, so that outcomes for students rise to the top once again.

We are also working to improve the quality of our state and the lives of our people by reforming our mental health system. As a state, we must take care of our most vulnerable people.

Quality services should be available for those with intellectual and developmental disabilities, as well as those with brain injuries. A growing number of veterans who have served in Afghanistan are returning home with brain injuries – and they need and deserve help to re-gain the highest quality of life possible.

I will continue to work for you in the Iowa Senate and do all I can to champion Iowa, to improve education, change the business, regulatory, and tax climate so that Iowa will grow and thrive.

We have another community forum scheduled in West Des Moines City Council Chambers from 9:30-11 a.m. on Saturday, March 24. Everyone is welcome.
