So, You Think You've Got Problems Keeping Up With Your West Des Moines Lawn?

Thieves didn't let the grass grow up around a temporarily abandoned lawn tractor. Also in the police blotter, an alleged fight over rum turns ugly and a couple sleeping late on a Saturday morning got a rude awakening.

Think you’ve had trouble keeping up with the grass during Iowa’s early spring? Be thankful you’re not in Andrew Scott Corigliano’s gardening shoes.

Corigliano told he was mowing a lawn at 2430 Maffitt Lake Road on April 10 when he left the property for about 15 minutes while he drove into Norwalk to refill his gas tank. When he returned, the garden tractor, valued at $200, was missing.

The tractor had been chained to a trailer, which the suspects did not take. Officer Jeff Logan said in his report that visible tire marks on the grass led east and then north, where the vehicle entered Maffitt Lake Road from the property. The key to the garden tractor was in the ignition switch.

Also missing was a chainsaw.

Alleged Fight Over Rum Lands Man in Jail

Adrian Jesus Rivera, 27, of 4001 E.P. True Pkwy., was arrested for domestic assault causing injury, an aggravated misdemeanor, on April 12 after West Des Moines police were called to his residence at 4:18 a.m.

West Des Moines EMS was dispatched to the scene to treat the victim, who had a bloody nose. According to police reports, she said had just pushed two of her front teeth back in place because Rivera had allegedly knocked them out of place when he kicked her in the face.

The victim told police Rivera arrived at her residence about 10 p.m. the evening before and they were watching movies. She said he was drinking shots of rum and the assault occurred after he accused her of stealing his alcohol.

Rivera was booked in the Polk County Jail.

While They Were Sleeping

A woman living in the 1800 block of Grand Avenue told West Des Moines police that she and her boyfriend were awakened by loud noises as they slept in on a recent Saturday morning and woke up to find their door had been kicked in.

Nothing appeared to be missing, but they went looking for the responsible individual when they encountered West Des Moines Police Officer Kenneth Brock, who was conducting a routine patrol of the area. He accompanied the woman back to the apartment building and filed a report.
