Summer is Breathing its Last Gasp: Grab Some Fun in the Sun

Before you can say "pass the sunscreen," summer will be over, kids will be back in school and vacations will be over. Here are five fun summer activities to enjoy before the leaves turn.

Monday: This is your last week to swim at Holiday Park Aquatic Center, operating on a reduced schedule until Aug. 18, when it closes for the season. Hours are noon to 6 p.m. Valley View Aquatic Center closed Sunday.

Tuesday:  Did you ever want to go paddling, but didn’t want to go alone? Bring your canoe, kayak or SUP and join other paddling enthusiasts for an evening on Blue Heron Lake at Raccoon River Park. Call (515) 222-3435 for more information.

Wednesday: It’s Jimmy Buffett night at Jimmy’s on 8th Street, 1238 Eighth Street, beginning at 4 p.m. The restaurant and bar offers island drinks on the patio and plays Jimmy Buffett tunes.
