They’re IronKids, they’re from 16 states and they’re competing Saturday at Raccoon River Park from 8 to 11 a.m.
The top finishers in each age group qualify to compete in the Hy-Vee IronKids U.S. Championship on Aug. 31 at Gray’s Lake in Des Moines. Last year, nearly 1,000 kids from throughout the U.S. traveled to Des Moines for this championship event.
An IronKids triathlon follows the same swim-bike-run format as an adult triathlon, with distances geared for the ages of the participants.

The event Saturday is open to all entrants, and you’ll see every level of ability – from teens who are wicked fast, to 6-year-olds swimming in water wings and pedaling tiny bikes with training wheels, and everything in between. No matter where they finish, all the kids get to break the tape, wear a medal and celebrate the fact that they’re IronKids.
