Thieves Took Everything But Kitchen Sink, Returned to West Des Moines House Later to Get It

A clue – a can of Mountain Dew - was dusted for fingerprints.

The second time thieves entered a property in the 1300 block of Crimson Street, they took the kitchen sink. The time before that, they had taken about everything else in the way of kitchen appliances.

The owners of the property are living elsewhere as they attempt to refinance their mortgage, according to West Des Moines Police Officer Tom Wynn’s report.

Wynn was first called to the address Thursday morning. The couple had last been there about noon on Oct. 21 and reported having locked the door and activated the alarm. The reporting party said he had seen a truck with a flatbed trailer at the property on Oct. 24, but assumed it belonged to the mortgage company.

On Thursday, they noticed the kitchen stove, a dishwasher and microwave oven were missing. Combined, the appliance are valued at $2,300.

When the couple returned to the property on Sunday, “they observed that the kitchen sink was now missing,” Wynn wrote in his report. “Nothing else was missing or out of order.”

The only clue was a can of Mountain Dew in the garage. The female half of the couple said the soda wasn’t theirs, since she is allergic to caffeine, according to the report.

The can was dusted for fingerprints. The victims have since changed the locks and alarms at the property.
