Valley Junction Businesses Sustain Damage in Saturday's Storms

businesses in West Des Moines sustained damage — including a roof torn off and a window blown out — during Saturday's storms, according to KCCI.com.

Heavy rain and high winds ripped the roof off the old Wright Tree Service building at the corner of Maple and Sixth streets. Wood and insulation were scattered for blocks, the TV station reported Sunday.

lost a front window in the storm, the KCCI story said. Shattered glass was swept into a pile out front and the window was boarded up sometime Saturday night.

sign blew away. A diner told the TV station the staff at the restaurant evacuated everyone to the basement at one point. They offered customers free drinks while they waited out the storm.

The flag pole outside of the building is bent over, and caution tape extends into the street to warn drivers and pedestrians of the potential for a complete collapse, KCCI said.

City crews began cleaning up early Sunday morning, chopping up the fallen trees and branches, and sweeping the sidewalks and streets free of debris.
