Vocal Technique, Choreography Emphasized at Summer Show Choir Camp

Students in the West Des Moines Community Education camps will demonstrate what they learned in free community concerts.

West Des Moines Community Education is offering a show choir camp for both beginner and experienced students entering grades six, seven, and eight.

Beginners’ Camp

The beginners’ camp is designed to be a first-time show choir experience and will be appropriate for any student entering sixth or seventh grade, the West Des Moines Community School District said in a news release.

Over a one-week period, students will learn a three-song set with appropriate choreography to match. The singing aspect of the camp will focus on singing in unison and two part harmonies, as well as proper vocal technique. The choreography will focus on learning large-group choreography and executing it, while singing at the same time.

Participants will present a free concert to family and friends on the final day of camp, Friday, June 21.

Advanced Camp

The experienced show choir camp is designed for students entering grades seven and eight who have had some experience singing in an organized chorus, with no dance experience required.  

Students will also learn a three-song set with fun, appropriate choreography. The singing aspect of this camp will focus on singing in two-three-plus part harmonies, as well as proper vocal technique.

The choreography will focus on learning both large and small group choreography, and executing it, while singing at the same time.  Students will also present a free concert on the final day of camp, Friday, June 28.
