West Des Moines Businesses, Schools Plan 'Start Somewhere Walks' Wednesday
About two dozen walks have been scheduled as part of statewide initiative to make Iowa healthiest state in the nation.
West Des Moines residents will take more steps Wednesday toward making Iowa the healthiest state in the union by 2016.
About two dozen 1-kilometer “Start Somewhere Walks” have been scheduled at schools and businesses as Iowa seeks record-breaking participation in the Healthiest State Initiative. Last year, 291,000 Iowans participated.
Gov. Terry Branstad and Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds’ Healthiest State Initiative responds to the 2011 Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index that showed Iowa was No. 16 in overall physical, emotional and mental health.
The Healthiest State Initiative is a privately led public initiative intended to inspire Iowans and their communities throughout the state to improve their health and happiness. To achieve our goal, individuals, families, businesses, faith-based organizations, not-for-profits and the public sector will unite in a community-focused effort to make Iowa the healthiest state in the nation by 2016.
