West Des Moines Community Education Offers Internet Safety Strategies

Kids spend almost eight hours a day on electronic devices. Presenter Marian Merritt will offer insight to parents about what they're doing on line and provie actionable strategies and tips to get technology use under control.

A news release from West Des Moines Community Education:

 An Internet Safety Event will be taking place on Thursday, October 18 at the Learning Resource Center, 3550 Mills Civic Parkway, West Des Moines, IA. 

 An estimated 13 million under-age kids are on Facebook. Many kids have more than one account to fool their parents. Teens text an average of 60 times a day, with girls texting over a 100 messages per day. The average child consumes over 7.5 hours of entertainment each day among all their media devices.

 Is it any wonder it’s hard to get them to come to dinner? Come to our community internet safety discussion, to be led by Norton’s Internet Safety Advocate, Marian Merritt. She will share with us the latest information about what young people are doing online, the real concerns we parents should have and actionable strategies and tips for getting technology under control. From social networking to sexting, cyber bullying to cybercrime, you’ll walk away with a new plan for helping your kids learn to use technology wisely and safely.

Presenter Marian Merritt provides consumer-friendly insights into technology issues as Norton’s Internet Safety Advocate.  Merritt authored Norton’s “Family Online Safety Guide,” an award-winning practical guide for parents on protecting children online. She has been with Symantec/Norton’s consumer team for over 15 years.

Merritt has appeared on numerous TV, radio, online and print news programs including ABC’s “Good Morning America”, New York Times, USA Today, US News and World Report, Time, Fox News, CNN, CNET.com, CNN.com, CNBC.com, CosmoGirl, Parenting, Family Circle magazine and others.  She serves on the Board for the Family Online Safety Institute, and the Advisory Boards for kidSAFE and the Family Circle Magazine. Merritt completed her MBA from University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, and has a BSBA from Boston University’s School of Management. She is a mother of three school-aged children and resides in Los Angeles.
