West Des Moines Firefighters Quickly Extinguish Early-Morning Blaze

West Des Moines firefighters extinguished a chimney fire early this morning before a home at 6220 Ashworth Road sustained major structural damage, Fire Marshal Mike Whitsell said in a news release.

The department got the call at 4:26 a.m. Upon arrival, smoke and fire were visible near the chimney and an occupant was on the roof attempting to extinguish the fire with a garden hose, Whitsell said.

The fire was quickly brought under control and no injuries were reported.

The exact cause of the fire is currently under investigation, Whitsell said, but it appears to be chimney related, as the occupants were burning heir fireplace all night to keep warm.

Initial damage estimates are at $50,000.
